change to synthetic oil or not

What's the opinion of synthetic oil in Classic or Antique Cars? Does it help an old engine and keep it in shape or is it better to use the regular oils such as (Valvoline, Quaker State, generic, etc.)

How about the weight or detergent vs. non detergent of the oil, any opinion ?
